Stylist magazine are running a Big Bake-Off to find the most delectable cake in show for a chance to win a trip to Japan.
There would be no taste testing so my sweet creation would have to be eye, rather than mouth, watering- a visual taste sensation.
I had planned to whip up a batch of cake-tails - cakes in the shape of cocktails with rum cream topping and a colourful fruity garnish. I gathered a few extra ingredients, set to bake, on Monday but ran out of day and rescheduled my baking for Wednesday.
At lunchtime on Wednesday, I decided to check out the competition, there were all manner of crazy cakes, including: a camera, a heart, a pair of bosoms, an owl, cocktail cakes….
My so called original idea had been thought of!
I needed a…
I’d had a few other ideas, including something that I’ve always wanted to do: Pimp That Snack.
A crisis coffee meeting with bezzie Simon ensued, and I finally settled on an idea.
After a casual glass of bubbly (win #15: post to come) at The Arch London, I hot footed it home and put the plan in motion.
The Pizza Cake.
Ooh, what are you making? asked my flatmate
It’s a pizza cake.
I think it’s pizza *pie*
Nope. It’s a cake… that looks like pizza… or a pizza that tastes like cake. A cake pizza. A pizza cake.
Hm. Ok, sounds… interesting.
I made a madeira sponge and allowed it to cool before decorating.
The buttercream icing, that was to masquerade as tomato base, required so much food colouring that, in the end, it tasted pretty vile.
I binned it and whizzed up a strawberry coulis with a couple of blueberries to get a nice tomatoey base.
I grated white chocolate over the top and then put it under a the grill for a little while until the chocolate melted a little and the base bubbled up.
As a veggie, I don’t usually condone the consumption of meaty morsels, but my pepperoni was crafted with strawberry infused marzipan.
A quick garnish of mint and, et voilà!
It conjures up a kind of a confused desire, I’d imagine the same kind of feeling that men experience when going to see the Ladyboys Of Bangkok.
Mmm, tasty pizza… want to eat that pizza… no, no, no… that pizza is a cake!
